Individual Essay Grading For: 20-21 Assertiveness Pretest - SHS
Question/AnswerPoints
Essay:  Write a 3-part assertive statement to a teacher who falsely accused you of turning in your homework late.
Student Answer:  I understand that you have a lot of work on your hands and keeping everything straight may be difficult. I am completely sure I turned the paper in on time because I worked very hard on it, but I have no evidence that I did. You will just have to trust that I’m telling you the truth.
Essay:  Write a 3-part assertive statement to a friend who keeps making plans with you and then cancelling at the last minute.
Student Answer:  I want to let you know that I really value our friendship and I care a lot about you. I was simply wanting to know why you continue to cancel our plans. I understand that things come up but I would just like to know if that is why you haven’t been hanging out with me lately.
Essay:  When you choose to be assertive, you won't always get everything you want. With that in mind, why should you still choose to communicate assertively? Provide two reasons.
Student Answer:  You should be assertive so that you aren’t being rude and hurtful to other people. It also means that your opinion is heard so that you aren’t trampled. I do think that sometimes it is okay to not be heard though. As a Christian girl, my goal is to bring the Gospel to those around me. In Matthew 1:34, Jesus said he came to “bring a sword.” This means that the truth of His Word will divide people amongst themselves because that is what really matters. I am alright with losing friends for the sake of the Gospel. And I am also fine with being stepped on at times. When my Lord was about to die for the sins of the world, he didn’t fight back. I will be like Jesus, not the people of this world.
