Question/AnswerPoints
Essay:  Write a 3-part assertive statement to a teacher who falsely accused you of turning in your homework late.
Student Answer:  I understand the difficulty of keeping track of so many student’s work, but I have a clear conscience that I turned the paper in on time. In the past I have always had my work turned in on time as well. If you believe that I am telling the truth I would really appreciate it if it wasn’t marked late anymore.
Essay:  Write a 3-part assertive statement to a friend who keeps making plans with you and then cancelling at the last minute.
Student Answer:  You are a really good friend to me but any form of relationship requires effort of both parties. I understand if you really have to cancel but I just feel a little bit like you just don’t want to hang out with me. If you could help me understand your point of view more fully I would really appreciate it.
Essay:  When you choose to be assertive, you won't always get everything you want. With that in mind, why should you still choose to communicate assertively? Provide two reasons.
Student Answer:  You could communicate assertively so that you are respecting others. There is also times for each of the form of communications. There is a time to be passive. When you are being persecuted for your faith, that is a time. The Bible says in Matthew 5 that we are to turn the other check. Also to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you. But there are actually times for righteous anger. That doesn’t hurt anyone or put them down, but rebukes them sharply if it is fit for the scenario. But being assertive isn’t always good because you don’t always need to speak your mind and let everyone know your opinion. Proverbs 29 says, “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.“
