Essay: Imagine that you are struggling to learn a concept in math. Provide brief descriptions of how you would address the first two components of self-regulation to work towards improving your learning. Student Answer: First I would plan both time that I can focus each day on math and what tools I am going to use to help me practice the concept. This would include thinking about when I could best focus on new learning, which would probably be after supper so I can take a break from the day and then get my mind back into learning. I would determine a set amount of time that I would focus each night, making sure to make it long enough to accomplish some practice but also reasonable so I can do my other homework. I would think about breaking down the new concept into smaller steps or chunks and divide it over the time period (I would start with 1 hour each night for two weeks). Then I would develop a system to monitor whether I am meeting my daily time and learning goals. The time goal could just be a checkmark on the calendar for each night I focus on my learning. For the actual learning I would find a tool that allows me to check my understanding such as doing problems from a book where I could check the answers or using an online practice guide that would grade my progress. I could chart my progress by keeping track of how my percentage correct on a graph. If my progress moves upward I will know I am making progress. If it is stagnant or decreasing I will know I am not making progress on my learning. I can use my calendar checkmarks to easily see if my time working and learning progress are correlated. |
