Essay: Imagine that you are facing a challenge and you are not sure you can be successful. Name three things you could do to raise your belief in yourself. Student Answer: To raise my belief in myself, I can often look back on other challenges and skills I've been able to develop, looking back on the effort I put in and the years I put in to develop said skill. I use that to ask myself why if I was able to develop that skill, why I can't develop this one. Generally, that is the best way for me to find motivation and belief in myself. There are other methods too, however. One such method is to get criticism. Now, this can be a double-edged sword. Harsh enough criticism can often be internalized and make me feel like a failure. However, sometimes the criticism can help me view the issue in a new light, a new angle I hadn't considered before. This can make me realize that the process of doing this task is actually much easier than previously assumed. Another point of motivation is giving myself grace. It's not necessarily that I can become good at something with enough motivation, but that I don't need to be perfect. It's okay to fail sometimes, it's okay to not be as good as my peers. This can sound like a very fixed mindset, however I view it as the opposite. It's not motivation by believing I can succeed, it's motivation by giving myself permission to fail, which allows me to keep trying despite my failure. I can accept that I'm not good at something, and turn that into motivation to keep trying. It's not that I can be perfect or good. I think it's perfectly acceptable to not want to be perfect at a skill. It's okay to be average, and that's motivating because instead of wallowing in my inability to succeed, I'm allowed to relax. I think when pursuing a challenge, contentedness is just as important as ambition. |
